We're going to be exploring some new spots, trying some delicious food, and just generally soaking up the amazing Turkish culture. So grab your favorite drink, get comfy, and let's dive into my latest Turkish adventure!
A Day in the Life
So, what does a typical day look like for a Filipina living in Turkey? Well, it's a mix of the familiar and the wonderfully new! My mornings usually start with a strong cup of Turkish coffee, which, let me tell you, is an experience in itself. The aroma alone is enough to wake you up! Then, it's usually off to my daily tasks, which might involve running errands, meeting up with friends, or exploring a new neighborhood. One of the things I absolutely love about Turkey is how vibrant and lively the streets are. There's always something happening, whether it's the call to prayer echoing through the city or the lively chatter from local markets. It's a sensory overload in the best way possible! I've been trying to learn a bit of Turkish, and while it's challenging, the locals are incredibly patient and appreciative when I try to speak their language. It really breaks down barriers and makes interactions so much more meaningful. Food, of course, is a massive part of my daily life. From savory gözleme to sweet baklava, every meal is a culinary delight. I'm constantly discovering new dishes and flavors, and my taste buds are doing a happy dance every single day. It's amazing how food can connect you to a culture, and I feel like I'm learning so much about Turkey just by exploring its incredible cuisine. Even simple things like buying fresh produce from the local pazar (market) feel like an adventure. The colors, the smells, the friendly haggling – it's all part of the charm. I've also been trying to incorporate more local customs into my routine, like enjoying a traditional Turkish bath (hammam) once in a while. It's such a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, and it feels like a true immersion into the culture. Of course, there are moments when I miss home, the familiar faces, and the food from back in the Philippines. But the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people really make it feel like a second home. They are incredibly welcoming, and I've made some wonderful friends here who have embraced me and my culture. It's this blend of discovery and belonging that makes living in Turkey so special for me.
Exploring Istanbul's Hidden Gems
One of the absolute highlights of living in Turkey is the opportunity to explore its countless historical and cultural sites. Today, we're heading to Istanbul, a city that truly bridges continents and centuries. While the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are must-sees, I wanted to take you guys to some of the lesser-known spots that really capture the soul of this magnificent city. We started our day at the Spice Bazaar, also known as the Egyptian Bazaar. The air here is thick with the scent of exotic spices, dried fruits, and fragrant teas. It's a feast for the senses, and I always find myself getting lost among the colorful stalls, picking up some unique souvenirs and delicious treats. From saffron to sumac, it’s a culinary treasure trove! Next, we ventured into the Süleymaniye Mosque complex. While the mosque itself is breathtaking, the real magic lies in the surrounding gardens and the stunning views of the Golden Horn. It’s a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a moment of quiet reflection and an unparalleled panorama. I love coming here to just sit and admire the architecture and the cityscape. It’s moments like these that make me feel so connected to the history and beauty of Istanbul. For lunch, we decided to try some authentic balik ekmek (fish sandwich) near the Galata Bridge. It’s a simple yet incredibly delicious local delicacy, and eating it while watching the ferries go by is a quintessential Istanbul experience. The fresh fish, the crisp salad, and the tangy sauce – it’s perfection! In the afternoon, we explored the Balat neighborhood, known for its colorful, historic houses and winding cobblestone streets. It feels like stepping back in time, and every corner reveals a new, picturesque scene. The vintage shops, quirky cafes, and local artisan workshops make it such a charming place to wander. I felt like I was in a movie! We also visited the Chora Church (Kariye Museum), famous for its stunning Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. The intricate details and vibrant colors are simply awe-inspiring, showcasing incredible artistry from centuries ago. It’s a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the city. Finally, as the sun began to set, we made our way to Pierre Loti Hill via a cable car. The panoramic view of the Golden Horn from the top, especially during sunset, is absolutely unforgettable. Enjoying a Turkish tea at the cafe up there while watching the city lights twinkle to life was the perfect end to our day of exploration. Istanbul is a city that constantly surprises and delights, and I feel like I've only just scratched the surface. There are so many more hidden gems waiting to be discovered, and I can't wait to share them with you all in future vlogs!
Culinary Adventures: Tasting Turkey
Guys, if there's one thing you absolutely must do when you're in Turkey, it's dive headfirst into the incredible food scene. Seriously, my taste buds have been on the most amazing journey since I got here! Today's vlog is all about our culinary adventures, and trust me, we've been eating very well. We started the day with a traditional Turkish breakfast, known as kahvaltı. This isn't just a meal; it's an event! It’s a spread of cheeses, olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, honey, jams, eggs, and freshly baked bread. And the menemen – scrambled eggs cooked with tomatoes and peppers – is pure heaven! I could eat that every single morning. It’s the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. For lunch, we decided to go local and grabbed some delicious döner kebab from a street vendor. The thinly sliced, marinated meat, served in warm bread with fresh vegetables and a creamy sauce, is just divine. It's so satisfying and unbelievably affordable. You haven't truly lived until you've had authentic Turkish döner! In the afternoon, we explored a local pastane (pastry shop) and indulged in some sweet treats. The sheer variety of baklava is mind-blowing – pistachio, walnut, shredded wheat… I tried a few different kinds, and each one was a flaky, syrupy masterpiece. My personal favorite has to be the pistachio baklava; it's sweet but not overwhelmingly so, with a perfect crunch. We also sampled some künefe, a dessert made with shredded phyllo dough and cheese, soaked in syrup. It sounds unusual, but trust me, the combination of crispy, cheesy goodness with the sweet syrup is absolutely addictive. It’s best served warm, and the melting cheese is just divine. Later in the day, we visited a traditional restaurant for dinner and tried İskender kebab. This dish features thinly sliced lamb, layered over pieces of pita bread, topped with a rich tomato sauce, melted butter, and a dollop of yogurt. It's a hearty and incredibly flavorful dish that truly showcases the depth of Turkish cuisine. The combination of textures and tastes is simply sensational. And of course, no culinary exploration in Turkey is complete without trying Turkish delight, or lokum. I bought a variety box with different flavors like rose, pistachio, and lemon. It's the perfect sweet ending to any meal or just a delightful snack to enjoy with a cup of Turkish tea. I’m constantly discovering new favorite dishes, and I’m so excited to keep sharing these food adventures with you guys. Turkey is a foodie's paradise, and I feel so lucky to be experiencing it all firsthand.
Connecting with the Community
Being a Filipina living in Turkey has been an incredible journey of cultural exchange and community building. One of the most rewarding aspects has been connecting with both the local Turkish community and other expats, including fellow Filipinos. Building these connections has truly enriched my experience and made Turkey feel like home. I’ve found that the Turkish people are incredibly warm and hospitable. They are genuinely interested in learning about other cultures and are always happy to share their own traditions. I’ve made some wonderful friends here who have invited me into their homes, shared their meals, and patiently taught me more about Turkish customs and language. These interactions go beyond superficial conversations; they are moments of genuine connection and understanding. For instance, I was invited to a local family's home for a traditional bayram (holiday) celebration. It was amazing to witness their traditions firsthand, participate in the festivities, and taste authentic homemade dishes. It felt like being part of their family, and I’ll cherish those memories forever. I’ve also been actively seeking out the Filipino community here in Turkey. It’s always comforting to connect with people who share a similar background and understand the nuances of being an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker). We often gather for potlucks, celebrate Filipino holidays together, and support each other through the challenges and joys of living abroad. These gatherings remind me of home and provide a strong sense of camaraderie. It’s like having a mini-Philippines right here in Turkey! We share stories, recipes, and advice, and it’s incredibly valuable to have that support system. Furthermore, I’ve been engaging with local community events and workshops. Whether it’s a language exchange program, a cooking class, or a local festival, participating in these activities has allowed me to immerse myself deeper into Turkish life and meet a diverse range of people. It’s through these shared experiences that genuine friendships are formed, and my understanding of Turkey broadens. I’m learning so much, not just about Turkish culture, but also about myself and my own identity as I navigate this multicultural environment. The sense of community here, both Turkish and Filipino, has been a cornerstone of my positive experience. It's the people who truly make a place feel like home, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have found such welcoming and supportive communities in Turkey.
